Hello everyone,
Before I come to the main point of this post, let me share something called nonsense Boost which is there to grab an extra 5% commission from our sales. I’ve personally opted-out. Even if the sales will be affected, I’ll not opt-in because it’s not worth itโฆ at least to me and many other domain investors I’ve discussed so far. The same thing which already existed is now being charged in the name of boost! I’m not falling for this trap.
It’s so simple to understand that if all domain investors get united and opt-out of this nonsense Boost, there is no way this will continue and they’ll have to reverse it back. Show the power of domainers and get united in this process.
Anyways, coming back to the August experience, as I mentioned in my July 2024 post about stopping this series as soon as I reach 10,000 domains in my portfolio, I just wanted to update that the next post of September 2024 experience will be the last post of this series. Although I’ll keep sharing some interesting sales every now and then.
Like everyone understands this business is volatile and how much inconsistency we face in our sales and even after reaching 9,920+ domains, I’m consistently facing inconsistencies but things do get more clear as the portfolio grows with quality of domains.
For half of the August month, there was very little activity both in terms of sales and offers which was disappointing because I’ve been adding around 100 quality domains every month.
Coming to the sales of August 2024:
AnnaDay.com – I always like to invest in FNLN domains but mostly focus on male names. I’ve very few female names and it was good to see this one selling for the BIN price of $4,888. Hold time was around 1 year only.
Dancepreneur.com – It’s a brandable domain for dance related niche and the buyer hit the BIN at $1,988. Hold time of 2 years only.
Panetti.com – This domain had a hold time of less than one year and had a BIN of $19,888. The initial offer came in at $10,000 but I remained firm at the BIN price. The buyer revised their offer to $12,000 and then to $15,000. During the entire period I remained firm and eventually the buyer purchased it. To be very frank, I lose more deals remaining firm than striking it. So one has to consider this risk when not moving any bit in lowering the price. It can go either way but for this domain, it worked well.
PrestoTech.com – This one had a BIN of $9,888 and the buyer came with an initial offer of $4,000. I revised my floor to $7,500. The broker did a great job in getting an extra $500 to strike the deal at $8,000. Thanks very much to the broker ๐
TeslaPower.com – The first thing anyone can think of a trademark and why did I acquire it? The thing is Tesla itself has a meaning as well as a person’s name. So this domain can be used for other purposes than only Tesla.com. This domain had a BIN of $9,888 and the buyer hit the BIN after negotiating a bit. Site is already developed and I’m happy to see when the site is up and running. Hold time of around 5 years.
CasaDiego.com – The buyer purchased at the BIN price of $4,888. Hold time of around 6 years.
Hosting.CO – This was the highest sale of the last month where the BIN was $50,000 but after going back and forth into negotiations, I sold it for $35,000. I know it’s a pretty big discount but sometimes I do accept it depending on several factors. The interesting thing about this sale is that I acquired this one in a bulk deal https://www.abdulbasit.com/domaining/acquired-ultra-premium-co-domains-including-business-co which took one year of negotiations! Hosting.CO was one of the domains for which I paid in 4 figures. Finally a good chunk of money was recovered from this investment and I hope to sell others soon as well.
DocuWise.com – Another BIN sale of $1,988 with the hold time of one year only.
Dacora.com – One word brandable domains are always great in demand. This one sold for the BIN at $5,888 with a hold time of 1 year only.
5StarPerformance.com – Finally a GoDaddy closeout sale at the BIN price of $1,988.
Blastoff.org – A rare .org sale for me at the BIN of $1,988. It’s always good to sell a domain in a different extension to keep myself motivated to buy in those TLDs.
HollyGolightly.com – One more BIN sale at $6,888. This remained under “On Hold” status for a short period of time before turning into a successful sale.
The number of inquiries for July 2024 just touched 1,500 which is around 100 less than the last month. January still remains the best in terms of number of leads. Even though I’ve added more than 600 domains since the end of January. The total number of domains at the end of August 2024 were a touch over 9,920. There were a total of 12 sales.
1 was partner registrar sale.
6 sales via GoDaddy search path.
5 sales via Afternic lander.
Total acquisition + holding costs (which includes transfers and renewals) was around $7,500 and the total amount of sales were $103,280.
I wanted to thank my Afternic rep Adam Ramsdell and the brokers who were involved in making the deals smoothly and professionally.
The above costs and sales amount may look too good for some investors but there is one important thing to keep in mind that Iโve invested well into 7 figures (USD) for acquiring and holding those 9,920+ domains. Also, just the renewal cost is over $120,000 annually. So there are a lot of expenses and money is invested. But overall, Iโm in profit and happy with the progress.
I wish everyone a great month ahead and have a lot of sales. Feel free to share your sales and give your feedback on mine if you like to. It doesnโt matter how good or good the feedback is.
really thanks for your sharing
Thank you so much Thileepan ๐
Thanks for sharing. Whatโs the commission on these sales? It would be helpful to include in the report. Regarding GD Boost, itโs classic squeeze tactics. Theyโll keep at it until people drop off, and with virtually no competition when it comes to distribution, we know where that leads. Given the size of your portfolio and revenue, you might want to consider managing leads in-house with Efty. You can hire your own broker or outsource the leads to one of the existing brokerages. If you list on GD or Sedo etc, mark up the price so it’s better if buyers come… Read more »
Thanks for your comment and your valuable suggestions. Since I haven’t enabled the boost, I’m paying 15% flat commission for all the sales happen via Afternic. Your suggestions are great and I’ll definitely consider implmenting for my portfolio if Afternic increases the minimum commission from 15% to even 20%. Also, I tried not to have BIN for all my domains for most of my career and had a very poor result so for this thing, I’ll stick to the BIN even though I believe of losing some money on the table but that’s how I can keep the sales ticking… Read more »
Amazing experience. Learnt alot.
Thank you so much Zubair brother ๐
Let put it this way, without your domains there won’t be afternic
They need our domains and they should be paying us to have our domains in their platform
Without the tennis players, without the soccer players, there won’t be professional matches.
Am I right??am I right??
That’s right. But the effort has to be collective and any individual cannot make a significant affect. I believe HugeDomains have removed their domains with Afternic and we’re talking into millions of domains. That alone I’m sure has put some dent on the revenue of Afternic but when things are done on a collective efforts, that’s more effective.
Deleting my domains from Afternic won’t make any changes but at least I can disable the boost and if everyone does the same, this can bring in some good results for domain investors.
Thank you ABM for sharing. It’s been a great experience reading, learning and understanding.
