Find the number of WHOIS searches done on your domains at GoDaddy.com

It’s always exciting to think how many number of times people be doing WHOIS searches for your domain. It’s really unfortunate you cannot know the overall WHOIS searches made on your domain but I have some good news for you 🙂

You can know how many WHOIS searches have been made on your domains which are at GoDaddy.com. I check every month for all my domains at GoDaddy and it’s really nice to see the number of WHOIS searches people do. I am sure most of those searches are from domainers in order to see when I will let the domain drop for them to grab 😉 But don’t worry I normally let them go until I see they are crap and won’t be useful for other domainer in reseller market. Still I don’t disagree they can’t make a fortune with that domain but chances are very slim.

Simply log in to your GoDaddy account. In GoDaddy’s Domain Manager, hold your mouse over the Tools tab at the top and select Exportable Lists. Next click the Add New Export button. You will see a drop down box. Select All My Domains and click next.

Now you can select which data you want to export. Select Whois Searches – Previous Period and Whois Searches – Current Period. Both these options must be checked before you click Next.

The final step lets you to select file type. I always prefer CSV which can be opened with Excel. Give any desired name to your list and click Finish. It will take less than a minute for GoDaddy to generate the list and will e-mail you when it’s ready. You can then download it on the Exportable Lists page mentioned above.

It will show both previous day, week and months stats. Unfortunately you cannot see the stats for more than one month longer period.

*NOTE* Don’t just hold domains on the basis of WHOIS searches done on it because your domain may be near to expiration date and domainers usually check WHOIS more frequently just to know if that domain will get dropped or renewed.

Which email address to be used for sending emails to end-users?

Many time I receive emails from resellers asking me about buying their names, and almost all the domains are junk. I noticed few things whenever I got these kind of emails that senders are having either yahoo.com, hotmail.com, gmail.com addresses which doesn’t look professional for a person working in domain industry.

In my experience if you use your own domain name for sending email to end-users would look perfect and more professional. I am currently using @AbdulBasit.com for sending emails which gives the impression to the potential buyer that I am in the field of domaining from long time. Also you must be careful in selecting the domain from which you are sending the emails. For example it should not be @xxddg.com or something which gives not so impressive look to end-user while reading out the domain.

If you own a .com of your name or have a company domain name than it’s the best option to go with. To look more authoritative in eyes of end-users you can use the domain which is aged. This shows of being the seller in this domain game for long time and won’t be a scam email.

My first five figure domain sale was also not a .COM

.NET – It was a .net extension with an interesting story. BuyMobiles dot net was sold for US$20,000. Actually I had developed a mobile blog with affiliate banners everywhere. I started receiving emails from people claiming where are their gifts or when their mobile will be delivered. They even mentioned the URL buymobilephones dot net from where they placed order. I asked them several times to contact that company instead of me!

Later I realized it was due the fact of misunderstanding and I got an idea to get in touch with this company. It was the first time when I picked up the phone for selling a domain name to an end user and it was really fruitful and wonderful experience. After talking to the operator my message was passed to the concerned person. Within an hour the company’s director contacted with a question of my interest “How much money are you looking for?”

I admit it was my first big sale and I made few mistakes like instead of asking him to make an offer I just asked US$25,000 and he countered with US$5,000. The next mistake was to lower my asking price to US$20,000. Soon I got next offer of US$10,000. I politely rejected, and another came of US$15,000. With my second rejection he accepted my offer of US$20,000.

As this was my first big deal so I learned few things which I would like you guys not to repeat the same. First was to give out my asking price. I should have asked him… Secondly, I lowered my asking price from US$25,000 to US$20,000 in just second reply which wasn’t good at all. Although after completing the deal I thought I left too much money on table but that’s how we go through our exciting learning phases to gain experience.

Long story short, it was really good deal and I am very happy with it. This gave me lot of motivation and sparked my interest in domaining from there on…

It will be interesting to know your first five figure sale. If you care to share your domain or at least the price would be nice. Also I would like to know what do you think about my first five figure sale? Did I left any money on table? Any more suggestions to new domainers?
