Afternic experiment of March 2020

Hello everyone,

This is the third post of the Afternic experiment series after I published January and February results which I’m hopeful that some of my readers find it interesting.

It was a bright start of March with 4 sales in first 15 days and the remaining 16 days went totally silent which was not very surprising because of the situation globally due to Covid pandemic.

Some of the highlights of March 2020 are as below:

There were once again very close to 550 inquiries which includes the inquiries on repeating domains as well. this time I just reached 3,700 domains right at the end of March.

As said earlier, I’d 4 sales and all that happened in the first half of March. 3 out of 4 sales happened via GoDaddy which includes Kword.com for $3,888, GoDragonfly.com for $3,988 and EastEight.com for $8,888. Only one happened via Afternic sales lander which was U-6.com sold for $1,888.

Kword.com acquired more than 5 years back. GoDragonfly.com acquired almost 2 years ago. EastEight.com also almost 2 years back and U-6.com more than 5 years before. Altogether acquisition cost for these 4 domains was under $500.

Considering the Covid pandamic haunting globally, I see the number of sales and total amount is decent.

Afternic experiment of February 2020

This is the second post after I published January results and this one is even better! So far I’m very happy with the results and the way my leads are handled and keeping me updated with what’s going on.

Some of the highlights of February 2020 are as below:

  1. There were close to 550 inquiries on 3,600 +/- domains in the entire month of February 2020.

  2. Had three domain sales, each one happened via different source. One via Afternic lander, actually the first one for me and the domain was Sillis.com which sold for $1,888. Another sale was via partner registrar which I’m not sure what was the domain because I had another 2 sales via GoDaddy cart of same amount so altogether remaining 3 sales were LipLove.com for $1,988, Summiter.com for $2,888 and Global-Auto.com for $1,988.

  3. Sillis.com acquired 6 years ago. Summiter.com acquired 3 years ago and LipLove.com 2 years back. For Sillis.com I received offer of $1,400 via Afternic but I stood firm on BIN price and eventually sold it 3 days later. Altogether acquisition cost for these 3 domains was in under $500.

  4. With the report I’ve, which shows there are several other ongoing negotiation with buyers whose current maximum offer is mentioned along with the quoted price which is always the BIN price. It’s good to see the progress as well behind the scenes. And I’m pretty happy with the Afternic brokers and especially my account manager who has been exceptional in managing everything.

On the other hand, one of my fellow domainer friend whom I’m sure many of you know with the name of @JudgeMind at NamePros who shared his stats and with his permission I’m going to share it below for you guys:

He had 4 sales in December that were direct leads from Afternic landers and another 6 in January which were direct from Afternic landers. Prices of sold names range from $299-$3799 with a median sale price of $2200.

In my opinion, those are impressive number of sales considering he has domain portfolio of 2,300 domains. An interesting thing is out of 2,300, only 1,900 are listed under Fast Transfers as others are with those registrars which doesn’t support Fast Transfers. His domain portfolio can be seen at Dan and Afternic.

On the other hand, since it’s sales related post so I’ll share an decent sale I made last month via Sedo in the shape of TADA.net for $7,888. Acquired the domain for low-mid $xxx in 2014. Long holding period but paid off very well in the end!

By the way, I’ll be sharing some real good acquisitions in my next post so stay tuned for that.

Afternic experiment of January 2020

With the last post where I discussed of doing an experiment with my entire portfolio by moving from Uniregistry sales lander to Afternic and today I would like to share some data with everyone to understand what happened last month.

As I keep sharing the number of domains in my portfolio which has now grown little over 3,500 to keep in mind.

I was contacted by many fellow domain investors for knowing how the new experiment worked out for me and I’m thankful to each of those for asking me.

My Afternic manager shared the reports from which I would like to disclose some key stats for better understanding.

  1. There were inquiries on little over 500 domains in the entire month of January 2020.
  2. Had couple of sales, one of which was DKAM.com which sold via BIN for $15,888. My first sale of 2020 and that too of 5 figures!
  3. One of the sale happened via GoDaddy cart and the other via Reseller cart which I think means via partner registrar of Afternic.
  4. None of those sales happened via sales lander which to me doesn’t mean the change hasn’t worked out. Sometimes the leads are in progress/negotiations going on with brokers and you never know when the domain gets sold.

Overall, I’m happy with the change even though there isn’t a sale made yet via the change I made last month. Also to note, the change I made was after a week was passed. However, I’ll stick to my plan of giving this change a time of at least 6 months and see how it works out.

From $2,888 and $4,400 quote to $15,888 domain sale

It’s been a fantastic year for myself and I would call it one of the best year overall in terms of domaining.

Hope the post title doesn’t confuse any one as I want to clarify this at first. The price of $2,888 was quoted to inquirer A and $4,400 was quoted to inquirer B and finally the buyer who acquired the domain is different from them. Also the timings of all 3 price quotes differ very much from each other.

First, I would like to admit my mistake that I by mistake set the price of $2,888 for Digital-Identity.com after acquiring the domain around 3 years back. So when the first few inquiries came in, I quoted $2,888 without realizing too much of the set price. The domain didn’t got sold for $2,888 as the buyer wasn’t interested at that price.

In 2018, I received inquiry via DomainAgents where the buyer initially offered $3,321 to which I quoted $4,400. Buyer came back with $3,321 again without moving a little so I gave my final offer of $4,000. Eventually the domain wasn’t sold.

I was suppose to do repricing of domains which was long due and did the repricing around some time in 2018 during which I finally set the price of $15,888 for Digital-Identity.com. The new price was quoted to several inquirers including one interested buyer coming via Uniregistry broker with an offer of $5,000 which I happily declined. This inquiry came in mid 2018.

Fast forward to 25th December 2019, I received an email from Afternic saying the domain Digital-Identity.com sold for $15,888 at BIN.

So yes, I openly admit my mistake of setting the price very low in past and it can happen with any one. At least, I realized and changed to what I think was the right price to set for Digital-Identity.com and I’m very happy to sell this domain for what it sold for. Also this is my highest hyphenated domain sale.

From $3000 offer to a $26000 domain sale

As I recently published a post with several of my recent domain sales, today I wanted to share another domain sale with complete detail of how it started and the deal was wrapped up successfully.

The domain I sold is Quaestor.com which was the oldest domain by creation date I owned until it sold. It was initially registered in 1994 but I acquired in 2018 for around $1100 via GoDaddy Auctions.

The inquiry came in via Uniregistry lander and I quoted price of $26,888. The buyer countered with $3000. After exchanging several emails and asking to come close to quoted price, the buyer revised his offer to $6,000.

Again after more communication, I said to present an offer of over $20,000 to get into negotiation.

With no response, I gave my final price of $25,000 with 7 days to accept. The buyer came in August and offered $10,000 but only after the 7 days period was over.

Sticking firm to the final price, the buyer came again in October and presented $15,000 offer to which I declined by informing the price is reverted back to $26,888 which was initially quoted because the offer of $25,000 was valid for 7 days only.

There was once again silence until the buyer came again in November by asking if I’m willing to negotiate as they’ve to decide and move on within a week period.

During this silence period of more than a month, I already upped the price at all marketplaces to $29,888 so I informed the buyer new price at all marketplaces but if he is still willing to buy, I can offer $26,000 to you only which is valid until the end of November.

Buyer immediately accepted and we used Sedo escrow and buyer paid the Sedo commission.

At one stage the domain was offered for $25,000 but ultimately sold for $26,000 to the same buyer. Every time you need to grab the offer at the right time, but you’re not always sure what’s that perfect time. We keep learning from our and others experiences. What best we can do is to keep learning all the time and improving ourselves.
